Budget Preparation     [ Top]

One of the first phases of any project is to define and prepare a budget for the control system required.  UMD Controls works with Industry and Municipalities on a continual basis to prepare Budgetary Estimates and Preliminary Designs for upcoming projects.  Throughout the competitive bidding and preliminary design phase of the project, UMD Controls works closely with customers to further define and detail the project, reduce costs, and suggest alternatives that keep the overall control project within budget.

Control System Design    Top]

One of the most important aspects of any project is to select the proper equipment that fulfills the needs of the overall control system design, and to permit future expansion.  As the term “Control System Integrator” implies, UMD Controls’ strengths lie in the area of selecting the proper brands and types of control equipment to permit seamless integration of both hardware and software.  We are by charter, not a distributor of any brand or manufacturer of equipment.  Our mission and primary goal is to provide the customer with a control system solution where the manufacturer of equipment is well supported in their area, where service, and warranty replacement have been established and entrenched.

UMD Controls maintains a staff of dedicated, knowledgeable, and experienced engineers, programmers, and technicians to support the preliminary design, drawing preparation, PLC, MMI, Motion Control, and Network software development phases of the project.  In all cases, the customer is consulted during each phase of the design, and preliminary drawing preparation.  Regular meetings are a critical part of the design process to permit both parties to review equipment selections, drawing submittals, and system software development.

Our engineering and drafting department personnel communicate on a daily basis with the customer, exchanging hard documents, such as AutoCad files, MMI Screens, and software sequence development via email throughout the course of the project.

Computer Aided Drafting Services    Top]

Our multi-station CAD department uses AutoCAD exclusively to provide the following typical Control System Drawings:

  • System Inter-Communication Wiring and Node/Station Addresses
  • Exterior Panel Layouts and Views
  • Pushbutton Station Exterior Layout and Door Rear View Wiring
  • Operator Terminal (MMI) Station Layouts
  • Subpanel Layouts and Bills of Material
  • 460/230 VAC Power Distribution Single Line Drawings
  • 460/230 VAC Drive, Motor Starter, and Contactor Circuits
  • 120 VAC Elementary Circuits
  • PLC Input/Output Module Diagrams
  • System Interface Diagrams
  • Cable Pull Schedules

All drawings can be prepared using the customer’s title block, drawing numbers and drafting format, with our standard drawing size being 11” x 17”.  Larger 22” x 34” or smaller 8 ½” x 11” drawing formats can also be provided, if requested, during the design phase.

“As-Built” Final drawing files are presented to the customer on CD or 3 ½” diskette, depending upon the size of the project, and the customer’s requirement.

UMD Controls routinely prepares drawings using the customer’s corporate drafting specifications and electrical symbols.

Control Panel Fabrication, Assembly, and Wiring    Top]

UMD Controls manufacturing department is a modern control system assembly, wiring, and testing facility.  Our panel manufacturing facility not only includes tooling, fixtures, and material handling equipment to assemble multi-door enclosures, but also includes facilities to receive, assemble, and ship up to 40 ft. long x 10 ft high self-contained Control Rooms.

Our panel department prides itself in the appearance, quality, and workmanship in every control system that UMD Controls manufactures.  Our standards exceed industry standards as well as maintain compliance with NEMA, NEC, OSHA, and JIC regulations.

All control panels are pre-tested before shipment, and each control enclosure separately undergoes a seven (7)- page quality control inspection

“Build To Print Services”

Whether your need is for small pump panels, or large multi-door control panels, UMD Controls welcomes the opportunity to present pricing to assemble, wire, and test, previously engineered control panels.  We have approached this business in a variety of ways; from one end of the spectrum where the customer provides all design engineering, drafting, and required panel material; to the opposite end of the spectrum where UMD Controls provides a firm quotation for providing all required material, assembly, wiring, and testing labor.

Programming    Top]

Our programming staff is proficient in the development of a wide variety of PLC Programming languages, Operator Interface MMI software development packages, Microsoft SQL Server, and Visual Basic applications.  As UMD Controls is an Authorized Rockwell Software Strategic Provider, our software engineers are well versed in the selection and implementation of Rockwell’s software suite of products, including, RSView32TM, RSLogix 5TM, RSLogix 500TM, and RSLogix 5000TM.  In order to present graphical interfaces to Operators, Supervisors, and Maintenance personnel, our software engineers have implemented a multitude of standard and custom applications using RSView32TM, WonderwareTM, FactorylinkTM, and Visual BasicTM.

Our latest addition in keeping pace with the most advanced Operator interface equipment available on the market today is the Xybernaut Wearable PC.  The Xybernaut Wearable PC is a belt, or vest worn fully functional personal computer with HUD (Heads Up Display), and Voice Recognition features.  Various options such as Ethernet RF Wireless Modem connectivity to the customer’s Server, wrist mounted Color Touchscreen, wrist mounted Keyboard, etc., are also available.

Now Quality Control Inspectors, Operators, Supervisors, and Maintenance personnel can stay connected in real-time to monitor or change Control System processes, Server databases, etc.

On-site System Startup and Commissioning    Top]

UMD Controls can provide complete on-site system startup testing and final commissioning services to perform all initial wiring tests and checkout, communication tests, AC/DC/Servo Drive tuning, PLC software debugging, Operator Interface software modification.  Our engineers are available to be on-site from the moment the control system arrives at the plant until the equipment is ready to turned over to production.

We are a nationwide systems integrator and as such have traveled extensively throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, and several foreign countries, providing service and support wherever required.

  After Sale Support

Even before the Internet and company Intranets permitted troubleshooting and software modifications to become commonplace over remote links, UMD Controls has been providing Remote Diagnostics and Software Modifications via direct phone line modem links.  Our engineers are experienced with remote troubleshooting and can readily provide assistance no matter what the time of day, or the day of the week.  We pride ourselves in our quick reaction times, and the ability to address whatever problems occur.

Training and Documentation    Top]

Complete data manuals are provided with each and every system shipped by UMD Controls.  All AutoCAD drawings, PLC programs, etc., are printed, bound, labeled, and presented to the customer during system startup, and again at system completion and final commissioning as drawing are updated to reflect “as-built” changes.

Operator manuals are developed in Microsoft Word, printed in color, with Operator Graphic Screens presented the same way in the manuals as they appear on the Operator’s terminal.  Startup, Run, and Shutdown sequences are documented for Operator use.

Field Service and Calibration    Top]

UMD Controls provides a full range of field service and calibration services.  As the majority of our system integration work relays upon integrating the proper field sensor with a PLC or computer system, UMD Controls maintains a wide variety of field calibration equipment, such as voltage, current, thermocouple, pressure, and flow calibrators.  Are calibrators are calibrated on a regular periodic basis and traceable to NTSB standards.

We offer field service, calibration, and repair services on the following instruments:
